The Eternal City of Light
Banaras, also known as Varanasi or Kashi, is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Situated on the banks of the sacred River Ganga in Uttar Pradesh, it is regarded as the spiritual capital of India.
For over 3,000 years, Banaras has been a center for learning, religion, philosophy, and music. The city’s name is derived from two rivers — Varuna and Assi — which meet here. Known as the “City of Light” (Kashi), it represents enlightenment and the eternal flame of knowledge.
The Sacred Ghats and Ganga Aarti
The Ghats of Banaras — steps leading down to the river — are the heart of the city’s spiritual life. There are more than 80 ghats, each with its own story. The most famous are Dashashwamedh Ghat, Manikarnika Ghat, and Assi Ghat.
Every evening, the Ganga Aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat mesmerizes thousands of devotees and visitors with its chants, lamps, and music — a divine spectacle symbolizing the eternal bond between humans and the sacred river.
Kashi Vishwanath Temple
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, known here as Vishwanath or the “Ruler of the Universe.” It stands as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas — the holiest Shiva temples in India. The temple has been rebuilt multiple times throughout history but continues to shine as the centerpiece of Banaras’s faith and devotion.
Pilgrims believe that visiting Kashi and bathing in the Ganga cleanses one’s soul and grants Moksha — liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
Sarnath – The Land of Enlightenment
Just 10 kilometers from Banaras lies Sarnath, the sacred site where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. This marked the birth of the Dharma Chakra — the Wheel of Law.
The magnificent Dhamek Stupa, ancient monasteries, and the Archaeological Museum of Sarnath attract pilgrims and history lovers from around the world. Sarnath is a living testament to peace, compassion, and universal brotherhood.
Sarnath is a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site located about 10 km from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It is the place where Gautam Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. This event is known as “Dharmachakra Pravartan” or “Turning of the Wheel of Dharma.”
